What it is: A surgical neck lift can be performed independently or in combination with a lower face lift. The neck lift is designed to eliminate drooping, hanging tissue from the anterior neck beneath the chin and lower neck area, the so called 'turkey-gobbler' deformity. The neck lift can be performed though incisions made around the ears with the neck tissue then lifted superiorly or it can be excised directly though an anterior approach. Typically this results in a more youthful chin and neck line.
Where it is Done: It is usually performed on an out-patient basis in a day surgery center.
What to Expect: Visible scars are placed in an inconspicuous area and are not readily visible post- operatively. In a rare case, a small plastic drain may be left in place for a few days. This is easily removed in the office during a post-operative visit.
Anesthesia and Medication: If a neck lift is performed by itself, it can be performed under local anesthesia. However, if the neck lift is combined with other face lifting procedures, general anesthesia is recommended.
