What it is: Breast lift procedures are performed to elevate and reshape drooping or sagging breasts. Most often breast sagging is the result of multiple pregnancies or significant weight loss. The breasts often droop downward approaching the abdomen rather than resting on the chest wall. Breast lift surgery can be combined with the placement of breast implants if enhancement of breast size is also desired. Most times, however, placement of breast implants is not necessary if adequate breast tissue is present.
Where it is Done: Breast lift surgery is performed on a out-patient basis.
What to Expect: Post-operative drains are not necessarily required. This depends upon surgical judgment at the time of the procedure. If drains are used, they are removed easily in the office during a post-operative visit. Although this procedure will result in a visible scar, the surgical scars are placed underneath the lower parts of the breasts and are hidden from view. Breast lift surgery involves re-contouring and reshaping the breast tissue only. The breast muscle itself will not be suspended upward.
Anesthesia and Medication: Many times this procedure can be performed under local or intravenous "twilight" anesthesia.
