What it is: An arm lift (brachioplasty) is performed to remove the drooping, redundant, flabby tissue of the inner, upper arm which drapes from the armpit to the elbow. The redundant arm tissue often begins to droop with aging or after excessive weight loss. The flabby skin and underlying fatty tissue are both surgically removed. This results in a more youthful and pleasing appearance.
Where it is Done: It is usually performed on an out-patient basis in a day surgery center.
What to Expect: A scar is placed in an inconspicuous area and is generally not easily visible. Occasionally post-operative drains are required. Depending on the magnitude of the areas to be treated, 2 small plastic drains may be left in place for approximately one week. These drains are easily removed in the office during a post-operative visit.
Anesthesia and Medication: Brachioplasty most commonly requires general anesthesia, especially if the procedure is combined with liposuction.
