| What it is: Cosmetic eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both. Loose or sagging skin that creates folds and covers the natural contour of the upper eyelid is removed. Redundant bags under the eyes are removed and droopiness of the lower eye lids is corrected. Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness can be removed from both upper and lower eyelid areas. These signs of aging typically appear as we mature and may also be influenced be heredity. Cosmetic eyelid surgery removes excess skin, eliminates bags and puffiness and restores firmness to the areas surrounding the eye. This results in a more youthful, more rested, more alert, and less angry appearance. Typically blepharoplasty restores a patient's self confidence and self-esteem. Where it is Done: Cosmetic eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is performed on an out-patient basis in Dr. Murtagh’s plastic surgery office in Naples Florida. What to Expect: Most cosmetic eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) patients have recovered well enough to return to work in approximately 1-2 weeks. For social engagements, a three week convalescence is recommended. Most patients can resume vigorous exercise in approximately 1-2 weeks post operatively. Anesthesia and Medication: Cosmetic eyelid surgery is often performed under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation.
